The problem
The art market runs on information that is public but scattered. Auction results sit on a dozen websites. Gallery rosters change quietly. Shipping a painting from New York to London involves a freight quote, a crate, insurance, customs and VAT, and nobody gives you all five numbers at once. Advisors and galleries piece this together by hand, and most of what they know lives in their heads.
What it does
ArtCarli puts that work in one place.
- Artists. Career timelines, exhibitions, gallery representation and auction history, with a summary of how the market around each artist is moving.
- Auctions. Upcoming and past sales across the major houses, with results as they come in.
- Galleries. A map of the gallery network you can filter by city, speciality or the artists they show.
- Insights. A daily briefing written from the day’s news, sales and signals, so you read three paragraphs instead of thirty tabs.
- Investment scoring. A score for an artist as an investment prospect, broken down so you can see exactly why it came out the way it did.
- Shipping and import costs. Live carrier quotes with crating, insurance, duty and VAT added, grouped by when the work would actually arrive.
- Visualiser. A photo of a room with the artwork placed on the wall, before anyone commits to buying or hanging it.
How it’s built
Underneath is a pipeline that runs on a schedule: collect, clean, analyse, publish. Each stage has its own queue, so a slow source can’t hold up the rest, and every call to a language model is metered, so we know what each feature costs to run. The web app is Django with htmx, which keeps it fast and easy for two people to look after.
Some of what we learned along the way is in the journal, including what building the shipping calculator taught us.
Where it’s at
ArtCarli is live with invited users. This year we moved its data onto licensed and official sources and cleared every release blocker from our last review. What’s left before we open the doors is operational: proving scheduled jobs run unattended, backups, alerting and billing. If you’d like to be one of the next people in, let us know.
Questions
- Who is ArtCarli for?
- Galleries, art advisors, dealers and serious collectors who need to follow artists, sales and prices without spending their week reading auction catalogues and press releases.
- Where does ArtCarli's data come from?
- From licensed data providers, official platform APIs and public sources such as auction house and gallery websites. It's collected on a schedule, cleaned and then summarised. Personal data is handled under UK GDPR, and ArtCarli has its own privacy notice.
- Can I use ArtCarli now?
- It's live but invite-only while we finish the operational work needed to open it up. You can request access at artcarli.com.
- How is the shipping calculator different from a freight quote?
- It uses live carrier rates and delivery dates, then adds crating, insurance, duty and import VAT so you see the landed cost. It also says plainly that a carrier's price is not insurance for the work.
